FAYETTEVILLE – The final member of the University of Arkansas women’s tennis team left competing in the singles draw at the 2013 USTA/ITA Central Regional Championship in Norman, Okla., Yang Pang came up short of reaching the finals and was eliminated in the Sweet 16 on Sunday.
Having taken part in a total of eight matches in just three days, the sophomore from Nanjing, China, was defeated in straight sets by senior Kanyapat Narattana of Oklahoma State, 6-4, 6-1.
Eliminated from singles tournament play, Pang takes on new life Monday when she returns to the court with teammate Kimberley – Ann Surin to compete in the doubles final against Mia Lancaster and Whitney Ritchie of host team Oklahoma at 9 a.m.
Singles and doubles champions receive an automatic bid to the 2013 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, which take place in Flushing, N.Y., during the month of November.
Pang and Surin reached the finals by winning five straight matches last Friday, after thunderstorms forced competition inside on the six indoor courts of the Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion and led to the entire 64-team doubles draw being played in one day. The final was held off until Monday on mutual coaches’ decision.
The regional tournament marking the first time this fall season the two have competed as a doubles pair, Pang and Surin look to stay perfect on the year and avoid blemish to their 5-0 record. Individually, Surin has gone 9-2 in doubles play this season, while Pang is 7-2.
