Pang selected for NCAA Individual Singles competition

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas freshman women’s tennis player Yang Pang was selected for the NCAA Individual singles competion, to be held May 22-27 at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Urbana, Ill. Pang was selected as an at-large singles participant, with seedings and brackets still to be announced. “We’re very excited for her to be selected to the NCAA Championships,” Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty said. “It’s a very big honor to receive an invite. Achieving this level of success as a true freshman is fantastic. I am certain she will arrive there full of confidence and ready for a good showing.”Pang has had a breakout freshman season for the Razorbacks, entering the ITA rankings for the first time in her career, currently ranked 45 in the nation. Pang finished her freshman season with an 11-12 dual record in singles, after leading the team with six singles wins in the fall. All of her 12 loses came against ranked opponents, and she also had seven wins over nationally ranked foes. She played the entire season at No. 1 singles, and had a 7-6 record in SEC play. For her sensational play she was named to the All-SEC First Team as well as the All-Freshman team. She was one of just two players to both the All-SEC First Team and All-Freshman team. This is the fifth time in the past six years that Arkansas has sent at least one player to compete in the individual singles tournament. The last Razorback to compete at the NCAA Individual Singles tournament was Anouk Tigu, who advanced to the second round in 2011 after also reaching the second round in 2010. The Razorbacks concluded the regular season 13-15 and were not selected for the team competition. Pang will look to bring the team a strong NCAA performance at the event hosted by the University of Illinois.
