Poppell adds to 2010-11 class

FAYETTEVILLE – Fourth-year University of Arkansas swimming and diving coach Jeff Poppell announced the addition of Alexandria Sutton to his signing class for the 2010-11 season this week.

Sutton is an All-American from Cardinal Gibbons High School in Pompano Beach, Fla. As a senior, she finished fourth in the 50-yard freestyle and eighth in the 100y freestyle at the Florida 1A State Championships. Sutton earned first-team All-Miami-Broward honors and was named to the Sun Sentinel’s All-County swim team at season’s end.

"Alex comes to us from one of the top swimming clubs in Florida, Fort Lauderdale Aquatics, where she has been coached by Duffy Dillon," Poppell said. "We feel that Alex has a tremendous amount of upside potential and we are very excited to have her with us. We will look to her as a valuable contributor in the sprint freestyle events and as a key member on our sprint freestyle relays. She is a delightful young lady, comes from a fantastic family, and should greatly excel in the environment that we are building here at Arkansas."

Sutton comes from a family of swimmers as her brother, Donald, is a member of the University of Texas swimming team that won the NCAA swimming championship this year.

Sutton becomes the 10th member of the 2010-11 signing class. Poppell previously announced the signing of Katalin Bor, Elizabeth Braun, Aubrey Hertzler, Julia Kucherich, Nicole Menzel, Carly Mercer, Molly Milborn, Kesha Naylor and Sigrun Sverrisdottir for next season’s team.
