FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Junior forward Marshawn Powell was named a second-team preseason All-Southeastern Conference player by the league office in Birmingham, Ala., on Wednesday. Powell was one of nine players named to the second-team squad and returns as Arkansas’ leading scorer and rebounder from a year ago. In Arkansas’ final exhibition game on Tuesday night, Powell scored 26 points n 11-of-17 shooting from the floor, blocked four shots, made one steal and grabbed three rebounds in the Razorbacks 76-54 win over Christian Brothers. "This is a testament to what Marshawn has done up to this point in his career,” Arkansas head coach Mike Anderson said. “Now the stage is set and I am excited for him. It is good to see that coaches in the league recognize his talent.” The Newport News, Va., native was a first-team preseason pick by the league coaches a year ago, but an offseason broken foot hampered the start to his sophomore year. He responded in SEC play however, averaging 13.0 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest, both totals ranking second on Arkansas’ roster. As a true freshman, Powell averaged 14.9 points and 6.7 rebounds and was one of four unanimous selections to the All-SEC Freshman team. His point total ranked third in Arkansas history for a freshman behind Joe Johnson and Scotty Thurman and his rebounding numbers were No. 2 all-time for an Arkansas freshman behind Sidney Moncrief.
