Prelims call on 20 Razorbacks, one relay

FAYETTEVILLE – The No. 7 University of Arkansas women’s track and field team will be represented by 20 student-athletes, spread among 12 events, and one relay at the 2011 NCAA West Preliminary Round, which will be held May 26-28 at Hayward Field in Eugene Ore. The top 48 declared athletes were selected into individual events per region, while the top 24 relay teams declared per region also qualified.

The NCAA East Prelim will be held at the same time at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex in Bloomington, Ind. Those who advance past the preliminary round will compete June 8-11 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. The top 12 from each region in each event, including relays, advance to the NCAA Championships.

In the short sprints, Gwendolyn Flowers (100m – No. 36, 11.63; 200m – No.29, 23. 77) will represent Arkansas in the 100 meters and 200 meters. She is one of two Razorbacks, joining Brittany Hyter, to qualify for two individual events at the preliminary event.

Arkansas will have three of the top 15 in the 400 meters, paced by Shelise Williams (No. 3, 52.12). She will lead a group that also includes Regina George (No. 6, 52.47) and Whitney Jones (No. 14. 52.97). In the 800 meters, the team will toe the line with Stephanie Brown (No. 7, 2:04.31) and Martine Borge (No. 32, 2:08.00).

The Razorbacks occupy five of the 48 spots in the 1,500 meters, the team’s highest total in one event. Kristen Gillespie (No. 5, 4:17.45) is the top qualifier for Arkansas that will also send Jillian Rosen (No. 9, 4:20.01), Paige Johnston (No. 18, 4:22.66), Samantha Learch (No. 21, 4:23.22) and Natanya Luther (No. 43, 4:27.05) to compete for a spot at the national meet.

Cali George (No. 19, 10:23.08) and Megan Jackson (No. 20, 10:23.49) are scheduled to run in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, and in the 5,000 meters, Miranda Walker (No. 20, 16:15.99) will vie for a national spot to cap her senior season for the Razorbacks.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Arkansas has two of the top-20 qualifiers in the region with Ivanique Kemp (No. 10, 13.17) and Hyter (No. 16, 13.29.). In her second event of the weekend, Hyter (No. 19, 59.21) is set to compete in the 400-meter hurdles.

The Razorbacks’ 4×400 relay team will be made up of George, Williams, Flowers and Jones. The foursome owns the No. 2 time in the NCAA this season with a school and Drake Relays record 3:28.63; national leader Texas A&M (3:27.33) is also set to compete in the West region.

Tina Sutej (No. 1, 4.61m) is the national leader and top qualifier in the pole vault and will be joined by Tara Diebold (No. 11, 4.20m) in the competition. In the triple jump, Shantel Thompson (No. 7, 13.29m) will represent Arkansas in the horizontal jumps. Makeba Alcide (No. 14, 1.79m) is scheduled to compete in the high jump.

Along with the accepted entries for next weekend’s preliminary events, the list of heptathlon qualifiers that will advance directly to the NCAA Championships was also released. Alcide, the SEC champion, has the No. 6 mark in the country with 5,646 points, and will take part in the seven-event competition. She is the top qualifier among the six sophomores in the event.

Off its third-place finish at the SEC Championships, Arkansas maintained its No. 7 spot in the May 17 release of the USTFCCCA national poll. The Razorbacks are one of six SEC teams in this week’s top 25, also including second-ranked LSU, No. 12 Auburn, No. 14 Tennessee, No. 21 Georgia and No. 23 Florida. Next week’s rankings will reflect only those declared and accepted into the championships.
