PONTE VEDRA Beach, Fla. – The Web.com Tour wraps up its 25th season this week at the Web.com Tour Championship held at TPC Sawgrass with three former Arkansas men’s golfers looking to earn their PGA Tour cards for the upcoming 2014-15 year.
Former Razorbacks Sebastian Cappelen (2014), David Lingmerth (2010) and Tag Ridings (1997) will open play on Thursday at the final tournament of the Web.com Tour finals. Cappelen will be part of the first group on the course at 6:40 a.m., while Lingmerth goes off at 7:02 a.m. and Ridings is in the afternoon wave at 11:41 a.m.
All three are coming off top 15 finishes at last week’s Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship in Columbus, Ohio, while Arkansas is one of 11 collegiate programs with at least three former players in this week’s field.
The top 50 players on the Web.com Tour priority list earn their PGA Tour Card following this weekend’s event. The priority list is made up of the top 25 players on the money list from the Web.com Tour regular season and the top 25 players on the money list from the four finals events.
Lingmerth enters the weekend No. 17 on the priority list having finished in the top 30 of all three Web.com Tour finals tournaments. A two-time All-American at Arkansas, Lingmerth put himself in good position from the start with a tie for fourth at the Hotel Fitness Championship. Lingmerth just finished up his second year on the PGA Tour with 10 top 25s and five top 10s over that span.
Thanks to a pair of top 25s in the Web.com Tour finals, Ridings sits just $703 out of the final spot on the top 50 priority list at No. 51. A three-time All-SEC selection from 1995-97 at Arkansas, Ridings has played in at least one PGA Tour event 12 straight years.
Cappelen just missed securing his PGA Tour card during the Web.com Tour regular season, finishing one spot out of the top 25 on the money list. After making the cut in just one of the first two finals tournaments, Cappelen responded last week by tying for 14th at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship to move up 39 spots to No. 66 on the priority list.
The only player in this week’s field from Denmark, Cappelen nearly made the top 25 regular season money list despite playing just 11 events. Cappelen started off his professional career with a bang in June, winning the Air Capital Classic with a score of 18-under par that earned him a spot on the Web.com Tour through 2015. A seven-time All-American over his four years as a Razorback, Cappelen ranks second on the Web.com Tour in birdie average (4.53), putting average (1.72) and fifth in driving distance (312.4).
