FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Razorback baseball team signed eight players during the early fall signing period Arkansas baseball head coach Norm DeBriyn announced Wednesday.
“I feel like we met the needs of our program for the following year with this signing class,” DeBriyn said. “We strengthened our pitching and middle infield with the players we signed. I’m very happy with the class and I believe they fit into our philosophy.”
Arkansas signed six high school players ranging from Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri. The Razorbacks also inked a pair of junior college players for next season.
Among the high school signees were Robby Daniel (RHP) of Poyen Ark., John Findley (RHP) of Jonesboro, Ark., Chris Krawczyk (RHP) of Kansas City, Mo., Cody Montgomery (SS) of Layfayette, Colo., Chris Taylor (SS) of Joplin, Mo., and Josh Wahpepah (RHP) of Shawnee, Okla.
“Cody Montgomery is a highly touted shortstop and a solid all-around player,” Debriyn said. “Chris Taylor was one of the top dual sports athletes in Missouri. We have had our eye on him a long time and we are happy to have him. Robby Daniel and John Findley are two of the top players in the state of Arkansas and each has a chance to contribute right away.”
The Razorbacks also signed a pair of left-handed pitchers in Craig Frydendall and Jay Sawatski from the junior college ranks.
Frydendall played for Yuba (Calif.) Junior College, while Sawatski played for Westark Junior College.
Frydendall was drafted in the 19th round last year,” Arkansas pitching coach and recruiting coordinator Tim Montez said. “He works both sides of the plate and throws in 86-89 mile per hour range. Jay Sawatski has a good curveball and also throws in the 86-90 mph range.”
The Arkansas baseball team opens the 2002 season Sunday, Feb. 10, against Missouri Southern in Fayetteville.
