Razorback Golfers Ready for SEC Championships

ST. SIMON ISLAND, Ga. – Arkansas’ 45th-ranked men’s golf team is set to begin play in the SEC Men’s Golf Championships at the Sea Island Golf Club’s Seaside Course on Friday at 7:50 a.m.
“We played a very good practice round today,” Arkansas Head Golf Coach Mike Ketcham said. “Our guys have a lot of confidence right and it is just a fun time for them to be playing golf.”
First round play begins Friday with the second round scheduled for Saturday and the final round on Sunday. The Razorbacks are in search of their first SEC title since the 1995 season on a very demanding Seaside Course at the Sea Island Golf Club.
“This is the best course we play all season,” Ketcham said. “It is manicured to perfection and a true treat for our student-athletes to be able to play. The Seaside course is set up so that the best team is going to win this tournament.”
The Seaside course is generous off the tees but provides the golfer with a challenge on approach shots to greens that are extremely fast and undulating.
Matt Bortis, ranked 84th in the latest Golfweek Individual rankings leads the Razorbacks contingent with a 72.6 scoring average. He has played in each of the Hogs tournaments this season, including notching the first win of his career at the NIT Invitational two weeks ago. He was named the SEC Golfer of the Week following his win.
Scotty Campbell, ranked 149th, has a 73.3 scoring average and along with Bortis provides the Hogs with a potent 1-2 punch.
Beau Glover is making the trip after turning in his best finish of the season, tied for 19th, at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate. The sophomore from Sherwood, Ark., has a 74.8 scoring average, but fired a three-under-par round of 69 in the first round of the Morris Williams.
Freshman Eric Shriver will also get his shot to tame the Sea Island Golf Club. Shriver has a scoring average of 74.6 in 15 rounds this season. Fellow freshman Barrett Lais rounds out the five-man team. Lais has played in the last two tournaments for the Hogs.
