BY ANDRES FOCIL
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Razorback cross country team will begin the 2004 season with the Arkansas Invitational on Friday, Sept. 3. The four-mile race is set to start at 6 p.m. at the Razorback Cross Country Course with Missouri Southern joining the Hogs in competition.
“We have a very young team this year,” Arkansas head coach John McDonnell said. “There will be a lot of new faces out there, but they have all been doing well in practice. This meet should be a good indication of their progress.”
Seven UA runners will take to the course, including senior Eric Gross, junior Luis Bordes, junior transfer Jose Campos, sophomore Adam Perkins and redshirt freshmen Chase and Travis Feltner, Tyler Hill and Jonathan Norris.
Gross, Bordes and Perkins were all plagued by minor injuries last year, so they are looking forward to returning to the course healthy and ready to go. At last year’s meet Perkins earned runner-up honors behind teammate Jason Sandfort, while Bordes crossed the line in sixth.
After redshirting last year the Feltners, Hill and Norris are all very anxious to finally have their chance to represent Arkansas in competition. Chase Feltner captured the Arkansas state cross country title twice, while Travis garnered two all-state honors. Hill was also had a successful prep career in Louisiana and was a three-time state cross country champion. Norris was a member of the No. 1 ranked team at The Woodlands High School. Campos is a successful transfer from Paradise Valley Community College in Pima, Ariz.
After the Arkansas Invitational the Hogs will have a week off before they travel to Joplin, Mo., for the Missouri Southern Invitational on Sept. 18.
