Razorback Newcomers Report to Campus

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – A total of 23 Arkansas Razorback newcomers reported on Sunday as UA head coach Houston Nutt and his staff officially began preseason camp. Sunday’s reporting group included 21 true freshmen and two junior college transfers.
“Everybody looks good and they have a smile on their face,” Nutt said. “We are glad to see them. They are very anxious. They are very confident. It is always so much fun on the first day. They are so eager and the attitude is so good. You can tell some of them have been working out. I’m sure a few of them have probably put some things off the last few weeks and took a little summer vacation. That is fine too.”
Reggie Banks and Jonathan Barry will arrive in Fayetteville on Monday and should be on the practice field no later than Tuesday according to Nutt. Both Banks and Barry are awaiting clearance from the NCAA Clearinghouse before they will be eligible to practice.
“We have two that we don’t feel like will be any problem, but they got some of their paperwork into the clearinghouse late,” Nutt said. “It is at the clearinghouse, we do know that so it shouldn’t take too long. We feel by Monday or Tuesday at the latest they will be ready to go.”
The Razorback newcomers don’t have to look back very far to see that they will likely have an opportunity right out of the gates. Arkansas played 10 true freshmen last year including quarterback Matt Jones, offensive tackle Shawn Andrews and cornerback Ahmad Carroll.
“This time last year we had no idea that 10 true freshmen would play,” Nutt said. “All those guys, even a guy highly recruited like Ahmad Carroll, you didn’t know if these guys were truly ready for the SEC and step into that type of environment. They proved that they were. I’m looking forward to seeing which ones will step up.”
Sunday’s agenda for the newcomers included residence hall check in, equipment distribution, physicals, photos and a host of other orientation type duties. The newcomers will hit the field for the first time on Monday morning (9 a.m.) before returning to the field in the afternoon (3:45 p.m.). They will repeat the same schedule on Tuesday before joining the varsity in media day on Wednesday. On Thursday, Arkansas will begin full squad two-a-day practices with workouts tentatively set for 9:15 a.m. and 3:55 p.m.
