FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas cross country team will be heading to their third meet of the season when they send 10 of the best Razorbacks to the Oklahoma State Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla., on Saturday October 5. The 8,000-meter race at the OSU Cross Country Course is the oldest consecutive cross country race in the United States and is in its 66th year. The university men’s division is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m.
“This will be the first time we’re sending our team at full strength,” Arkansas head coach John McDonnell. “It will be a good indicator of how good we’ll be this year, because schools like Abilene Christian will be there. There will also be good competition up front from some junior colleges. The front pack will be tough, but we need to have a good solid performance and get out fast and run hard.”
Senior Patrick Thomas; juniors Westley Alkin, Alistair Cragg, Silverus Kimeli, Daniel Lincoln and Chris Mulvaney will be competing this weekend. This will be Cragg’s first meet of the 2002 season, since resting a sore groin and is expected to finish towards the top of the pack.
Lincoln and Kimeli have each already claimed a victory this year. Kimeli finished first with a career-best time (20:00) at the four-mile Arkansas Invitational. Lincoln recently earned SEC Athlete of the Week honors after his first-place finish at the Missouri Southern Invitational with a career-best time of 23:55. It was Lincoln’s third first-place career finish.
Sophomore Jason Sandfort; freshmen Said Ahmed, Luis Bordes and Michael Taylor will also be representing Arkansas.
A total of 25 schools will be competing at the Jamboree, including quality competitors such as Abilene Christain, Kansas and Oklahoma State. With a team victory at OSU, the Hogs would claim their third title of the season and give them more momentum going into the Southeastern Conference Championships on November 4, in Gainesville, Fla., to capture their 29th consecutive conference title.
Before they travel to Gator country, the Hogs will host the 8K Chile Pepper Invitational on October 19, on the Razorback Cross Country Course at Agri Park.
