Razorback Trio Makes Cut At Latin America Amateur

PANAMA CITY, Panama – Two current Arkansas men’s golf players and one former Razorback and are in contention at the midway point after making the cut in the Latin America Amateur Championship at Club de Golf de Panama.

In the field of 108 players, Arkansas has three individuals in the event, led by former Razorback Nicolas Echavarria who is representing Colombia and posted rounds of 67-72 – 139 (-1) to sit T-5th and just two shots off the pace.

Junior Alvaro Ortiz continued his consistent play on Friday with an even-par 70 as he birdied two of the final three holes and is T11th overall at 71-70 – 141 (+1). Playing for his home country of Mexico, Ortiz is four shots off the pace and in contention heading into the weekend after three top-five finishes during his fall season.

Freshman and Mexico native Luis Garza was one of eight players in the field to finish under-par on Friday, rolling in six birdies and finishing with a 1-under 69. He is T-20th overall with rounds of 75-69 – 144 (+4).

Round three of the Latin America Amateur Championship will tee off tomorrow morning at 6:30 a.m. with live television coverage starting at noon CT on ESPN News.

The winner of the event will earn exemption into the 2017 Masters Tournament and the Amateur Championship, while also earning exemption into the final state of qualifying for the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills.
