Razorback football holds Saturday scrimmage

The University of Arkansas football team spent much of Saturday morning scrimmaging inside Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. The team is not scheduled to practice Sunday and will return to the fields Monday with two workouts scheduled (9 a.m. – 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.). Following Saturday’s scrimmage, UA head coach Bobby Petrino spoke with the media and his selected quotes are below:

STAT LEADERSPassing:Ryan Mallett – 29-of-42 for 305 yards and 5 touchdowns (57, 10, 12, 7, 25), no interceptions

Receiving:Reggie Fish – 5 receptions, 111 yardsJarius Wright – 5 receptions, 83 yards, 1 TD (57 yards)

Rushing:Broderick Green – 16 carries for 45 yards, 2 TDs (1, 7)

Defense:Matt Harris – 13 tackles

"It was good getting out there and getting some live work. I thought I’d saw a lot of improvement from the defense as far as how we were flying around and making plays. You have to watch the video to really evaluate the individuals, but the speed they were playing with was very good. As far as the quarterbacks go, I thought Ryan Mallett did a good job of completing passes and knowing where to go. Tyler (Wilson) again showed how well he can throw the ball. He has to be able to execute the offense and do the different things with the running game and not fumble snaps. He needs to keep improving on that part. We played a lot of running backs. Initially, you see Dennis Johnson stand out. He played fast and made some plays. The plan for Michael Smith was to play one series and get him out so we got that accomplished. He made one nice run and had some yards after contact. Broderick Green showed some power. We ran him when he was tired and gave him the ball seven times in a row, which was good to see because that’s when you have to wear the defense down. Ronnie Wingo, Jr., showed what he can do in the open field. He’s explosive and a very good athlete who does a nice job cutting."

On the receivers:"We saw guys that could make plays. Jarius Wright has the speed and Joe (Adams) can really run with the ball. The more we get him the ball, the more he can run with it. I thought (Greg) Childs stood out and had a lot of third down conversions. He ran hard with the ball."

On how the team prepared for Saturday:"I liked our attitude. I liked the way our guys prepared for this scrimmage the way we want them to in the training room and in the locker room. They came out and were focused in the practice prior to scrimmage. I was very impressed, we’ve taken a big stride there in knowing how to prepare and get ready for a scrimmage.

On the Sunday schedule:"They don’t get the whole day off, we just don’t have practice. We have some weight lifting to do and to watch the video and then get ready for Monday’s practice. They’ll get the break from getting out in the sun and running around on the field. They’ve got to do a good job from here until then getting with the trainers and taking care of their body. They need to understand this is what the rest is for so they can get their body ready to practice Monday."
