Razorback Golfers Tied for Lead after First Day of Del Walker Intercollegiate

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Arkansas men’s golf team opened its first tournament of the 2006-07 season on a positive note Thursday with a 36-hole total of 1-over par 569, good enough for a tie for the lead at the Del Walker Intercollegiate at the Virginia Country Club.

The Razorbacks, led by new head coach Brad McMakin, opened with a 2-under-par 282 on the opening 18 holes of the 6,631-yard, par-71 layout. UA followed that with a 3-over-par 287 in the afternoon’s second round. St. Mary’s of California joins the Hogs at the top of the leaderboard after firing rounds of 284 (E) and 285 (+1).

Texas-San Antonio and the University of San Diego are tied for third place with a two-round total of 5-over-par 573 with Fresno State rounding out the top five at 7-over-par 575.

Sophomore Jason Turner, fresh off of a redshirt season in 2006, posted the Razorbacks top score of the day and sits in a tie for fourth place. He fired an opening round 69, his fourth round in the 60s in a career that spans just eight rounds. Turner followed that with a 1-over-par 72 in the second round. He is just two strokes off the lead of Texas-San Antonio’s Thomas Kearney and Kyle Collins.

Newcomer Andrew Landry, a transfer from Lamar, was consistent from start to finish on Thursday, shooting two even-par rounds of 71. He made one birdie and one bogey in the first round and followed that with three birdies and three bogeys in round two.

Senior Hog Beau Glover and Southern Miss transfer Jason Cuthbertson finished the day in a tie for 29th place with 3-over-par totals of 145. Glover opened with a two-over-par 73 and came back with a one-over-par 72 in the second round. Cuthbertson fired a two-under-par 69 in round one and then carded a 5-over-par 76 during the afternoon session.

Junior Barrett Lais battled back after a rough opening round to post a one-over-par 72 in the second round. He is in a tie for 50th after the first day of play. Lais shot an opening round 77.

Arkansas will tee of the final round of the Del Walker Intercollegiate on Friday morning.
