FAYETTEVILLE — The University of Arkansas women’s golf team travels to Athens, Ga., this week for the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the UGA Golf Course. The event is one of the oldest in college golf and one the Razorbacks have been a part of since adding the sport in 1996-97. In addition, it has added familiarity in Razorback head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor who was a four-time All-American at Georgia and is very comfortable with the golf course. “The Liz Murphey is a staple on our schedule, year-in and year-out,” Estes-Taylor said. “I think it’s a golf course that we’ve been successful on — I guess a bit of my local knowledge has been helpful there. It’s a golf course that sets up well for us and most of the players have played it already. It has a lot of elevation changes and slopey greens but something we see every day at Blessings.” Sophomore Emily Tubert leads the charge into Georgia this week. The Burbank, Calif., native has three top 10 finishes this season and enters the tournament as the 11th —ranked collegiate player with a win-loos record of 466-58-25. She is joined by redshirt sophomore Emma Lavy, junior Victoria Vela and sophomore transfer Emily Podzielinski who have all competed in every event this year. Freshman Hally Leadbetter rounds out the traveling five for the Liz Murphey. “We are starting to catch our stride and as a coach that’s what you want to see this time of year,” Estes-Taylor said. “We’re excited to get back out on the course and see what happens.” Arkansas opens play on the first tee and is paired with South Carolina and Michigan State in an 8 a.m. central start time. The rest of the field includes No. 2 Alabama, No. 4 Auburn, No. 51 Augusta State, No. 38 Denver, No. 17 Florida, No. 28 Florida State, No. 9 Georgia, No. Kent State, No. 25 Michigan State, No. 93 Missouri, No. 54 Notre Dame, No. 24 Oklahoma, No. 33 Purdue, No. 27 South Carolina, Virginia and No. 47 Wake Forest. The Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic is the final regular season event before Arkansas hosts the 2012 Southeastern Conference Championship at Blessings, April 20-22. The event is free to the public.
