ATHENS, Ga. – University of Arkansas men’s tennis players sophomore Johan den Toom and junior Santiago Munoz posted singles wins in the consolation draw on the third day of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Georgia.
Both den Toom and Munoz fell in the round of 64 on Friday, but got a chance at redemption in the consolation draw on Sunday. den Toom first defeated Davidson’s J.B. Gough 6-4, 6-4. Next, after a tough first set where he was pushed to a tie breaker, Munoz beat Andrew Dromsky (Tennessee) 7-6(5), 6-4.
In the main singles draw, sophomore Juan Marino fought through three sets but ultimately lost to Georgia’s Eric Diaz 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 in the round of 16.
Making it to the semifinals of the doubles bracket, junior William Albanese and freshman David Herrerias fell to Loic Minery and Benjamin Salle (Lander) 6-2, 6-1. Also in the doubles semis, Munoz paired with freshman Branch Terrell. The Razorback duo were defeated by Conner Huertas Del Pino and Sebastian Yllera of ETSU 6-3, 6-1. Huertas Del Pino and Yllera went on to win the finals of the Division II doubles bracket.
Sunday’s play concluded Arkansas’ time at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships. Razorback men’s tennis will next see action at the SEC Fall Coaches Championship Sept. 19-22 in Gainesville, Fla.
