@RazorbackMTEN Sweeps Mercer In Home Opener

FAYETTVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas men’s tennis team claimed its first two dual wins of the season as it swept Mercer 6-1, 6-1 in a doubleheader at the Dills Indoor Tennis Center on Friday.

With the wins, the Razorbacks improved to 2-0 overall, while the Bears fell to 0-3.

Arkansas got momentum on its side quickly, taking all three doubles matches. Playing in the No. 1 spot, junior Santiago Munoz and freshman Branch Terrell bageled Ruben Vanoppen and Manuel de Luis to claim the first win of the day. Next, junior Giammarco Micolani and senior Jovan Parlic defeated Arnav Mohanty and Austin Emmet 6-2 and freshman David Herrerias and junior William Albanese teamed up to beat Sam Philp and Oliver Snaider 6-4.

Three Razorbacks took their singles competition in straight sets. First, Micolani netted his first collegiate singles victory, bettering Anderson Scarpa 6-1, 6-0. Then, Munoz defeated de Luis 6-3, 6-1 and sophomore Johan den Toom claimed a 6-2, 6-4 win over Snaider to clinch the match for Arkansas. In the final wins of the first match, sophomore Juan Marino battled through three sets to beat Arnav Mohanty 6-7 (6-8), 6-1, 10-5 and Terrell defeated Vanoppen 7-6 (10-8), 6-7, 10-7.

Starting the second match off in a similar fashion, Arkansas swept the doubles portion of play. Munoz and Terrell again teamed up to net their second 6-0 win of the day over Philp and Snaider in the No. 2 spot. In the No. 1 spot, Micolani and Parlic beat Vanoppen and Emmet 6-2, then den Toom and Marino bettered Arsav Mohanty and Arnav Mohanty 6-3 in the No. 3 spot.

Arkansas claimed five singles wins to close the day. First, Herrerias netted a 6-0, 6-1 win over de Luis and Munoz toppled Vanoppen 6-2, 6-1. In the No. 1 spot, Parlic also won in straight sets, defeating Snaider 6-0, 6-4 to clinch the match. Albanese and den Toom collected the last Razorback victories of the afternoon. Playing No. 4, Albanese defeated Arnav Mohanty 6-0 (6-1), 7-6 and den Toom beat Scarpa 6-4, 7-5 in the No. 2 spot.

The Razorbacks will be back in action on Sunday when they host No. 9 Texas at the Dills Indoor Tennis Center at 1 p.m. CT. Arkansas tennis T-shirts will be given out to the first 200 hundred fans.
