BY ANDRES FOCIL
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – After outstanding fall campaigns Razorback sophomore Adrians Zguns and senior Nathan Price were both ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) preseason top 50. Zguns found himself in the 14th spot, while Price was ranked at No. 50. Zguns is one of only four Southeastern Conference tennis players in the top 15. Arkansas also received a team ranking and stayed where it ended the fall at No. 39.
“It’s a good starting point for us,” Arkansas head coach Robert Cox said. “Hopefully 39th will be the low ranking for us this year. I’m excited about the team with (Adrians) Zguns and (Nathan) Price. It’s a testament to the great fall they had. I was disappointed Nathan was only ranked at 50th, but it’s a good starting point for him. It’s great to have two players ranked in the top 50. I’m proud of where we are and now we just have to start the season off well.”
Zguns’ fall campaign was highlighted with his win at the Region V Championships. He posted five consecutive victories at the event, including wins over teammates Imrann Ismail and Price. Additionally, Zguns defeated six ranked players in the fall, including No. 22, Matt Cloer of Florida State and No. 6 Chad Harris of Vanderbilt. He also won four straight at the Icy/Hot Men’s All-American Championships.
Price played in several fall events and had success in each one. He posted a 16-6 fall record with six straight victories at the Icy/Hot Men’s All-American Championships. He reached the finals of the Region V Championships, where he played Zguns. At the ITA National Indoor Championships he defeated Richard Barker of Rice, No. 18 in the nation, to reach the consolation finals.
Arkansas will open the 2004 spring season on Jan. 15-19, at the SEC Indoor Championships in Athens, Ga. After the Hogs return from Georgia they will host an exhibition match against Stirling College of Scotland on Jan. 21, at 3 p.m.
