Razorbacks Claw Out 8-6 Win Over Auburn

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – There was no quit in Arkansas’ eighth-ranked baseball team Sunday in an 8-6 win in the series finale against 21st-ranked Auburn in front of 2,623 fans at Plainsman Park.
The win improved Arkansas record to 22-6 on the season and 4-5 in SEC play. Auburn dropped to 21-10 and 5-4 in league action.
Jake Dugger did not get the start on Sunday after going 1 for 7 in the first two games of the weekend, but pinch hit in the seventh and came through in the clutch. The sophomore from Omaha, Neb., hit the first pitch he saw over the left-field fence to give the Hogs an 8-6 lead.
The home run came off Tigers’ reliever John Madden who had not allowed an earned run in his last 21 innings of work. Madden allowed two runs in three innings of work on the day.
Daryl Maday earned the win in relief to improve to 3-0 on the season. He worked 2.2-scoreless innings and allowed only two hits. Lee Land pitched the final four innings to earn his second save of the season. He allowed one run on six hits and struck out three.
Clete Thomas went 5 for 5 on the day for the Tigers and became the second player in Auburn history to hit for the cycle.
Clay Goodwin finished with two hits and two RBI to lead Arkansas’ 12-hit attack. The Hogs collected more hits on Sunday (12) than they did in the previous two games of the series.
The Razorbacks manufactured a run in the sixth inning to take a 7-5 lead on a fielder’s choice by Brian Walker.
Thomas continued his red-hot hitting in the bottom of the sixth inning with his fourth hit of the day, a solo home run just out of the reach of center fielder Craig Gentry in left-center field. The home run closed the Hogs’ lead to 7-6.

AU starter Josh Blake was lifted prior to the start of the second inning. He surrendered five runs – three earned – on four hits in his one inning of work.
Blake Parker connected for his second home run of the series and his fifth of the season in the third inning. The solo shot over Auburn’s version of the green monster in left field gave the Hogs a 6-1 lead.
Auburn’s four-run third inning chased Arkansas’ starter Shaun Seibert from the game. He allowed five runs – four earned – on six hits in 2.1 innings of work. The big blow in the inning was Joey Huskins two-RBI single up the middle.
The Razorbacks’ bats finally awakened in the first inning of Sunday’s series finale. Four hits led to five Arkansas runs as the Hogs jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. Hamblin delivered a two-RBI single up the middle and Goodwin ripped a two-run double to right-center field. John Marquardt added a sacrifice fly to deep left-center field for the fifth run.
The Tigers struck back in the bottom of the first inning with a run after Thomas tripled into the right-field corner and Karl Amonite followed with a double down the right-field line.
The Hogs will play two mid-week games with Northern Colorado on Tuesday and Wednesday at Baum Stadium. Both games are scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
