Razorbacks Wrap Up Day One At Southern Intercollegiate Championships
ATHENS, Ga. – The Arkansas men’s tennis team kicked off its fall campaign at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Georgia with five Razorbacks advancing in their respective brackets in individual play Friday.
In the Division I Singles bracket, four Razorbacks advanced to the round of 32 on Friday, with one advancing to the round of 16..
Three Hogs advanced in straight sets Friday. Senior Adam Sanjurjo began the day with a straight set victory over Barry University’s Carlos Gomez 6-4, 6-1, while fellow senior Pedro Alonso fell to Mikhail Sokolovsky from UCF 7-6, 6-2. Sophomore Jose Alonso topped Ignasi Forcano 6-4, 6-3.
Sophomores Josh Howard and Alex Reco needed three sets to top Alvaro Regalado of Columbus State and Manoel Alencar from UCF. Respectively. Howard won his match 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 while Reco went 7-5, 4-6, 6-0. Oscar Mesquida advanced to the round of 16 winning 6-2 in straight sets over Juan Lugo of ETSU.
In the Division II bracket, Oscar Mesquida defeated Evan Fragistas of Virginia Tech in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the round of 32. In an all Southeastern Conference Matchup Enrique Paya def. Britton Johnson (Georgia) 6-2, 7-5 in straight sets to advance to the round of 16.
