Razorbacks Continue Play In California

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — The Arkansas women’s tennis team returned to action at the 2016 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships on Tuesday.

The 49th-ranked duo of sophomore Ana Oparenovic and senior co-captain Shannon Hudson was held off by Texas A&M’s Rachel Pierson and Rutuja Bhosale 8-5 in the first round of the qualifying doubles draw.

In the first round of the qualifying singles draw later in the day, Michigan’s 41st-ranked Kate Fahey defeated 60th-ranked Oparenovic 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.

“Shannon and Ana couldn’t quite find the magic from last spring’s epic dual match against the Aggies,” head coach Michael Hegarty said. “However, we were pleased with the overall level of play today. Both Ana and Shannon played quality tennis and deserve to be here with the best in the nation.”

Last spring against the 17th-ranked Aggies, Hudson delivered a key 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Bhosale at the No. 3 singles position to help the Razorbacks to a 4-3 dual-match win in College Station, Texas.

The Razorbacks will continue action tomorrow in the consolation rounds.
