Razorbacks Dispense of SMS, 14-5

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Danny Hamblin homered for the third straight games as 10th-ranked Arkansas beat Southwest Missouri State 14-5 at Baum Stadium Wednesday night in front of 2,274 fans.
The win was the eight straight for the Razorbacks, improving their record to 29-6 on the season. The Hogs are 7-5 in the SEC heading into this weekend’s series at 23rd-ranked Tennessee.
“I thought we played really well tonight,” Arkansas Head Coach Dave Van Horn said. “We gave up the big inning, but we battled back and had a big inning of our own. We swung the bats pretty well all night and played pretty good defense.”
Hamblin went 2 for 4 on the evening with two RBI and his team-leading and career-high ninth home run. The blast to left-center field was his fifth in his last three games. Hamblin leads all active Razorbacks with a .375 batting average.
John Henry Marquardt continues to flourish in his starting role at second base with three hits in five at bats and a career-high three RBI. He is just behind Hamblin with a .374 batting average.
Charley Boyce earned the win out of the bullpen for Arkansas to improve to 7-4 on the season. He has now hurled 14.1 consecutive scoreless innings for the Hogs – all out of the bullpen.
Starting pitcher Devin Collis worked three innings and allowed five runs – three earned – five hits. Nick Schmidt worked a scoreless seventh inning and Josh Smith followed with a perfect eight inning. Shaun Seibert got into trouble in the ninth inning, but he worked around a single and two walks to get out of the inning without giving up a run.
Blake Parker scored three runs and cracked his eighth home run of the season. Craig Gentry also picked up three hits to go along with two RBI.
Jake Bunten took the loss for SMS to fall to 3-3 on the season. He gave up three runs on six hits in 1.2 of an inning. Chris Mackey started and allowed four runs – one earned – on four hits in 2.1 innings.
Zach Harris hit his fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot in the fourth inning. SMS scored all five runs in the fourth inning on four hits and two Arkansas errors.
Van Horn was ejected for the first time this season in the sixth inning arguing with home plate umpire Tom Svehla.
