Razorbacks Fight Off Aztecs, 4-2, at ITA Natio
Louisville, Ky. – After two tough defeats, the Arkansas Razorback men’s tennis team got a win at the ITA National Indoor Tournament at the Louisville Indoor Racquet Club.

Following a loss to No. 4 California in the first round, the Razorbacks looked better against a Southern Cal (No. 13) team who is the defending NCAA champions had knocked of the Hogs in last year’s NCAA tournament, 4-0, losing 4-2. On Saturday, the Hogs attempted to get back on track facing No. 33 San Diego State.

The Hogs found themselves no strangers in this match, losing the doubles point and then being forced to claw their way back in the match. Out of eleven matches played thus far, the hogs have only won three doubles points, for an overall record of 8-3. Down 1-0 early, the Hogs would trail 2-0 in the singles portion before winning four straight singles matches to clinch the win over the Aztecs.

Head coach Robert Cox was extremely pleased with the day’s results.

“Our doubles played okay today,” Cox said. “Our doubles are getting better, but we still need to improve. I really like the teams that I have.

“Today was no different from other days. We’re used to playing from behind and we realize that when we play well, we can come from behind and win four solid singles matches. We had a good team meeting last night and we had a good plan coming into the match.

“We’re down 2-0 and win at the four, five and six positions to go up 3-2 with tow matches still on court. Bubis won in straight sets to clinch the match. That was the best match Bubis has played in quite some time. What can you really say about the four through six positions, they’re just awesome.”

In the doubles portion of the match, the Hogs hung around, but not for long enough. At the number one match, Nathan Price and Eduardo Pacheco were up against the No. 6 duo in the country in Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo, losing, 8-1. The number two position for the Hogs saw Bubis and Matt Roberts fall to Felix Hardt and Armando Carrascoso, 8-4. The number three match was suspended with the Razorbacks serving for the match, 7-4 at 40-love.

In singles, the Razorbacks would rally, winning all of their matches in straight sets. First off the court was Roberts, defeating Michael Coelho, 6-1, 6-3. Next off the court was another freshman, Gajjar. Gajjar defeated No. 113 Coren in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

The Aztecs would respond as Maiberger, the No. 13 player in the country, defeated Price at the one, 6-1, 6-3. The Razorbacks wouldn’t lie down as freshman Adrians Zguns stepped up at number four to give the Razorbacks the lead at 3-2, defeating Carrascoso, 6-1, 6-4. The Hogs were then forced to wait as Bubis and Pacheco still lingered on the court.

Pacheco’s match would be suspended when Bubis won. Bubis defeated Redondo at the number two, 7-5, 6-4. Bubis’ win would clinch the match for the Razorbacks and give them a tie for 13th in the tournament.

The 2-1 weekend for the Razorbacks saw Arkansas’ freshmen standout. The three combined to go 5-1 in the tournament with Zguns and Gajjar both posting 2-0 records.

The Razorbacks, now 8-3 and 1-0 in the SEC, look to add another win when they face Auburn on Feb. 28. Match time is set for 1:30 p.m. at either the Dills Indoor Center or the UA Outdoor Tennis Complex, depending on weather.
