Razorbacks Gain Confidence as Spring Practice
BY ANDRES FOCIL
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Rain earlier in the day forced Arkansas to practice inside for two hours at the Willard and Pat Walker Pavilion. The Hogs put on full pads again and the UA staff is hoping they can capitalize on this final week of practice with a solid attitude and effort from the players.
“We’re getting better, but we have to try to improve our technique and things like that,” Arkansas head coach Houston Nutt said. “We’re doing better than we were a week ago, but we still have to try to improve. We have to get the most out of them during this week. If we come with the attitude that we had today we’re going to get something out of it. They believe in what’s going on, especially the defense. They have a new system. I really feel like they’re buying in and playing with a lot more confidence.”
The “confidence” Nutt referred to really stood out in Arkansas’ secondary unit during Monday’s workout.
“Michael Grant comes back out here from track and gave a solid effort today,” Nutt said. “That helps that he gets a couple days a week. Chris Houston, Darius Vinnett, Michael Coe and Matterral Richardson give us a deep group and they’ve been able to stay on the field.”
The quarterbacks have all displayed potential, making the job of narrowing down a starter more difficult for Nutt.
“It will be hard, but the thing you’ll know after the spring is who is furthest ahead,” Nutt said. “Right now we have a good competition going. It’s hard to give everyone a fair shake when there are five guys that know what they are doing on a consistent manner with this many practices.”
Nutt also expressed his desire to work the quarterbacks more, but is limited with a depleted offensive line.
“When you have a full offensive line you’d like to put the quarterbacks through more and you’d love to have more scrimmage plays than what we’ve been doing and end up with a spring game,” Nutt said. “If you have everybody in two or three groups we’d be doing just that and hopefully we’ll get to that point.”
