Razorbacks Gain Ground on No. 1 Tennessee in T

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas is ranked No. 2 for the second consecutive week, but gained ground on top-ranked Tennessee in the latest Trackwire Online Indoor Track and Field Top 25 poll released on Tuesday.
The Razorbacks garnered 55 points and trail the Volunteers (59) by only four points. In last week’s listing, Tennessee held a five-point edge over Arkansas. The rankings are based on the projected team scores of each institution at the 2002 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Fellow Southeastern Conference members Alabama and LSU are tied for third in the rankings with 41 points while regional rival Oklahoma rounds out the top five with 23 points. A total of eight SEC schools are ranked in the latest Trackwire Online listing.
Arkansas earned three qualifiers in the 5,000-meter run last weekend at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa. The Razorbacks now boast four automatic and 12 provisional qualifiers for the NCAA Championships. Tennessee has recorded three automatic and 11 provisional qualifying times and marks so far this season.
The two schools won’t have to wait until the NCAA meet to compete, however, as both will battle for the league crown at the 2002 SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Feb. 22-24 at the Randal Tyson Track Center. Arkansas has won nine of the previous 10 conference indoor titles since entering the league in 1992.
Arkansas will also host the 2002 NCAA Championships on March 8-9 at the Tyson Center. This will be the third consecutive year that Fayetteville, Ark., has hosted the national championship meet.
