Razorbacks Host Vanderbilt in Pivotal SEC Series at Baum Stadium

Arkansas hosts Vanderbilt in an important SEC series at Baum Stadium this weekend. The Razorbacks enter the three-game set at 4-5 in league play, two games out of Alabama’s SEC West Division lead. The Commodores are 5-4 in the SEC East and just a game back of Eastern Division leader Florida.
The Hogs have struggled to find consistent starting pitching in SEC play beyond Friday night starter Nick Schmidt. Charley Boyce and Shaun Seibert have been up and down in conference play with Boyce now pitching well out of the bullpen. Schmidt is 4-1 on the season with a 2.68 ERA in a team-high eight starts. He is 1-1 in three SEC starts with a 3.00 ERA. Schmidt will get the start on Friday night, but the Arkansas coaching staff has yet to determine a starting pitcher for Saturday and Sunday’s games.
Offensively, the Razorbacks have continued to score runs this season, averaging 7.9 runs per game and 11.4 hits with the SEC second-best batting average (.324). Danny Hamblin has stepped up his play since the loss of Casey Rowlett and Scott Bridges to suspensions. Hamblin is hitting .340 for the season with four home runs and 22 RBI. Jake Dugger has been supplying the power with a team-high seven home runs and 34 RBI.
Vanderbilt brings one of the SEC’s best pitching staffs to Baum Stadium this weekend. The Commodores boast a 2.88 team ERA and are holding opponents to a .227 batting average. RHP Jensen Lewis (5-1, 0.96 ERA) will start on Friday night for VU with LHP Ryan Mullins (3-0, 3.49 ERA) going to the hill on Saturday. The series finale the Commodores will start LHP David Price (2-0, 1.19 ERA), who is striking out 13.35 batter per nine innings.
