Razorbacks Look Ahead To ITA All-American Main Draw

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – With the pre-qualifying and qualifying rounds complete for the Arkansas men’s tennis team, the Razorbacks now look ahead to the main draw of the 2017 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men’s All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

No. 27 Jose Salazar will be the lone Razorback competing in Thursday’s main draw. The senior holds the best singles winning percentage (.800) on the team with a 4-1 record. Salazar opened his fall campaign winning four straight matches, before falling in the quarterfinals at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic.

In the qualifying draw, junior Oscar Mesquida won his round of 128 bout with Lamar Remy of Wisconsin 6-1, 6-3. The Ciutadella de Minorca, Spain, native put up a good fight in the round of 64. Despite falling 6-0 in the first set, Mesquida fought back to win the second 6-3 to send the match to the third and final set, where he eventually fell 6-4.

In the pre-qualifier draw, Arkansas dropped all three round of 265 matches and its single round of 128 match. Jose Alonzo received a first round bye, earning him an automatic spot in the round of 128.

The Razorbacks had much more success on the second day in the pre-qualifier consolation draw. Arkansas won two of its three singles matches as Josh Howard-Tripp earned his team-high fifth singles victory of the fall, defeating Turner Vogus of Memphis 6-2, 6-0.

Jose Alonzo picked up his third singles win, knocking off Borriss Kamdem of Tulsa 6-2, 6-2. Branch Terrell was scheduled to face Grayson Broadus of Notre Dame but Broadus withdrew due to an injury.

The main draw will being on Thursday and run through Monday.
