FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -Arkansas begins the defense of its 1998 NCAA national championship Friday, at the Hurricane Classic, in Tulsa, Okla. With seven-consecutive meet wins last season, including their eighth Southeastern Conference championship and their ninth NCAA championship, the Hogs will look to continue their success in 1999. “It’s our opening meet and we haven’t done any work.” head coach John McDonnell said. “We are training straight through this meet.” Individual SEC champion and District VI champion Michael Power will be the lone competitor from the 1998 team to participate in the Hurricane Classic. All-Americans Matt Kerr and Andrew Begley will compete in meets to come. “This is a week earlier than we have ever opened up before,” McDonnell said. “This will be an opportunity to see another course, and maybe it will be a little cooler.” Hosted by the University of Tulsa, the meet will begin at 6 p.m. with the men’s race, followed by the women at 6:30 p.m..
