Razorbacks Place Finalists in Singles, Doubles
Tulsa, Okla. – Aleksey Bubis defeated teammate Eduardo Pacheco in the semi-final round of the ITA Omni Hotels Region V Tournament for a place in the finals against Tulsa’s Alejandro Tejerina (No. 97).

Bubis defeated Pacheco 7-6, 6-3, for a spot in the championship game. This is the first trip for the Hogs to the Region V Tournament in Tulsa as they were granted a change fro Region VI to Region V earlier this fall. The last time a Razorback was in the finals of an ITA tournament was in 2001 when now volunteer assistant coach Oskar Johansson won the ITA National Clay Court Championships.

The Razorbacks also placed a doubles team in the finals. Bubis teamed with Kristofer Ivarsson to knock off Drake’s Kirk Schuler and Anthony Perkins, 9-8(6) – the team they defeated to win the Hurricane Invitational, 8-3 in September. The Razorback doubles duo will face Tulsa’s Ryan Livesay and Dustin Taylor.

“I am extremely proud of our guys in representing Arkansas in the ITA/Omni Hotels Region V Tournament,” head coach Robert Cox said. “This is the first tournament we have been invited to since changing regions and to do what we have done is very strong.

“Both Aleksey and Eddie played outstanding tennis all week long. It’s just too bad that they were on the same side of the bracket and had to play each other. Bubis and Ivarsson played a good Drake team, and I’m proud of how they played. Aleksey should be coined our ‘Iron Man’ as he has played nine matches and has gone undefeated with two to go in the morning.”

By Bubis appearing in the finals, he automatically qualifies for the ITA National Indoor Championships. For Bubis and Ivarsson to go as a doubles team, they must win the region.
Bubis’ championship match against Tejerina is slated to begin Monday at 9am. The double match will follow with time allowed for Bubis to rest.
Bubis defeated Illinois State’s Jason Smit, 6-2, 6-1, to move on to the quarterfinals where he faced the No. 1 seeded Vedran Vidovic (No. 60) of Indiana State. He defeated Vidovic 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, for a semis spot where he and Pacheco would be matched.

On the same side of the bracket, Eduardo Pacheco moved on to the quarters in the tournament with a win over Angelo Manns of Wichita State. Pacheco downed Manns 6-3, 3-6, 6-0. He then ousted Tulsa’s Ryan Livesay, 7-6(6), 6-1, for a spot in the semis.

Adrians Zguns spectacular season at Tulsa came to an end. His win streak at Tulsa stopped at six when he was downed by Tulsa’s Tejerina, 6-3, 6-2.

Bubis and Kristofer Ivarsson continued their impressive doubles streak at Tulsa to make them 8-0 all time at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Bubis and Ivarsson defeated Tejerina and Steven Timperley of Tulsa, 6-0, 6-1, to move on to the quarters. In the quarters they beat Oklahoma’s Tommy Garrison and Chris Mitchell, 8-3. In the semi’s they knocked off Drake’s Schuler and Perkins in a grueling tie-breaker set to move on to the finals, 9-8(6), to play Tulsa’s Livesay and Taylor on Monday.

Pacheco and Matt Roberts sent St. Louis’ Taylor Curran and Tom de Larzac packing with an 8-4 victory. They were felled by the duo of Lovre Brajkovic and Vedran Vidovic of Indiana State, 8-5.
