Razorbacks Practice as Nutt Gives Jones the No
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Razorbacks finished practice on what turned out to be a warm sunny day on the practice fields behind Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. Following the practice, Houston Nutt met with the media and quickly settled any questions regarding who would be the starting quarterback come Sept. 7.

“Matt Jones is going to start the first game,” Nutt said. “In regards to Ryan Sorahan and Tarvaris Jackson, there is not a number three quarterback in the bunch. We believe in both Jackson and Sorahan. I believe, depending on the situation, those guys will play. I think we are very fortunate in comparison to last year – the depth of the quarterback. What we said all along was that the guy who gets the team in the end zone the most consistently will be the number one guy. Matt Jones has done that.

“Jackson and Sorahan are both very talented. They both have strong suits. Tarvaris has a great arm and Ryan knows the offense – knows the checks – probably better than anyone. It’s hard to call any of them the number three quarterback. Call them what you want two-A or two-B but we have three quarterbacks who can play and I believe that.”

Nutt was pleased with the concentration of his players following their second day of classes.

“We gave them yesterday off to get in the school routine,” Nutt said. “I thought they came out and gave us great concentration today. We really worked hard on the Boise State game plan. We had a good kicking period today. The defense ran around really well and the offense executed well. I really stressed no turnovers and protecting the ball.”

The Razorbacks will continue to practice through Friday of this week before beginning game week preparations on Monday. The Razorbacks kickoff against the Boise State Broncos in the Hogs’ season opener at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium on Saturday Sept. 7 at 6 pm.
