Razorbacks Ready for New Mexico Tournament

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas golf team will compete in its second tournament of the fall season when the Hogs travel to Albuquerque, N.M., for the Tucker Invitational for the first time on Oct. 1-2. The Razorbacks will be looking for a better showing after they turned in a 10th place performance at the Notre Dame Invitational on Sept. 19.
“We had a really good week of practice,” Arkansas head coach Mike Ketcham said. “It was probably the best week we’ve had since school started. The guys are ready to go to New Mexico. It’s a totally different course than what we played on at Notre Dame. It has wider fairways and bigger greens. It’s a ball beater’s course. I believe the team we’re taking has more than adequate length for this course. They’ve had a chance to get their feet wet in one tournament and now they’re ready to go out and win one.”
Sophomore Matt Bortis, redshirt freshman Scotty Campbell and true freshmen Will Osborne, Eric Shriver and Buddy Wilkins will represent UA on the University of New Mexico’s 7,350-yard par 72 Championship Golf Course. Two 18-hole rounds will be played on Friday and one final 18-hole round will be contested on Saturday.
Bortis, Campbell and Osborne each competed in the season opener and Bortis was the team’s top finisher. The Tucker Invitational will serve as Shriver and Wilkins’ Razorback debut. Shriver is a native of Cary, N.C., while Wilkins hails from Glen Ellyn, Ill.
Joining Arkansas on the greens are Air Force, Arizona, Baylor (36), BYU, Colorado (23), Colorado State (47), Fresno State, Hawaii, Nevada-Reno, New Mexico (27), New Mexico State, San Diego State, Texas A&M (38), Texas Tech (20), UAB, UNLV, UTEP and Wichita State (48).
After the Tucker Invitational, Arkansas will set its sights on the Gary Koch Intercollegiate in Tampa, Fla. The tournament is scheduled for Oct. 11-12.
