Razorbacks Sweep Vanderbilt with 3-0 Win; Firs

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas completed the three-game sweep of Vanderbilt 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Baum Stadium in front of 6,788 fans to move into second place in the SEC’s Western Division.
The shutout was the first against a SEC team for Dave Van Horn at Arkansas and the first for the 16th-ranked Razorbacks in league play since a 10-0 win over at Alabama at Baum Stadium on March 23, 2002.
“That was definitely our best ball game of the weekend,” Van Horn said following the game. “We were really solid and did a good job in the outfield.”
The Hogs improve to 27-6 on the season and have won six straight games. Vanderbilt is 20-10 overall and 5-7 in league action.
Three Arkansas pitchers held the Commodores in check as they scattered nine hits and three walks. Daryl Maday earned the win with two innings of scoreless relief to improve to 3-0 on the season. Devin Collis started and pitched 3.1 innings, allowing three hits and walking two.
Charley Boyce made his second appearance of the weekend out of the bullpen to earn his first save of the season and only the second of his career. He threw 9.1 scoreless innings for the weekend, allowing just five hits and holding opponents to a .167 batting average.
A bases-loaded walk to Stephen Robison plated the first run for the Hogs in the second inning.
Arkansas tacked on its second run of the day with Scott Hode’s RBI double down the left-field line. The double came on the 10th pitch of the at bat.
“That was a great at-bat,” Van Horn said. “It was a 10 pitch AB (at bat). He kept fouling them off away, away, away, and he finally got one inside and turned on it and hit it hard. That was a big run for us.”
Danny Hamblin completed an impressive week with a solo home run off the foul pole in the eighth inning to give the Razorbacks a 3-0 cushion. Hamblin finished the Hogs’ 5-0 week with eight hits in 16 at bats, two home runs and seven RBI.
Arkansas travels to Tulsa, Okla., on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. contest with Oral Roberts. The Razorbacks then return home on Wednesday for a 7:05 p.m. game with Southwest Missouri State before heading to Knoxville, Tenn., for a three-game SEC series next weekend.
