FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – After earning one automatic and four provisional qualifiers in last weekend’s SEC West Challenge, the second-ranked Arkansas track and field team hopes to add to their list of NCAA automatic qualifiers as they travel to Joplin, Mo., for the Missouri Southern Invitational this weekend.
“So far I’m really pleased with how we look at this point in the season,” Arkansas head coach John McDonnell said. “There are still some guys that have to come around, like Mike Taylor and Jonathan Reeves, but that will happen in time.
“For this weekend I’m looking to get a guy or two qualified in the 800,” McDonnell said. “Said Ahmed really looks like he’s ready to run his distance. Then, hopefully we can get some more qualified in the long jump, the 60-meter hurdles and 60-meter dash. I think our best chances are in those events. It should be a good meet for us and it’s close by.”
The pole vault will kick off the meet on Friday, January 24, at 6:30 p.m. Senior Josh Roberts, junior P.J. Brown and sophomore Jimmy Duke will compete for the Razorbacks in the event.
Twenty-six athletes in 11 events will be competing on Saturday, January 25, with the shot put starting the day at 11 a.m. Sophomore Jonathan Reeves and junior Tom Crowder will represent the Hogs in the throwing event. In other field events action four Arkansas athletes, including seniors Richard Smith, Ramon Washington and juniors Maurice Robinson and Jaanus Uudmae will be competing in the long jump. Crowder and sophomore Cory Oldham will compete in the high jump.
Crowder will also run in the 60-meter hurdles, along with senior Eddie Jackson, junior Michael Thomas and freshmen Brad Dittoe and David Wittenmyer. Thomas will also compete in the 60-meter dash with sophomore Ahmad Carroll.
Sophomore Chason Pompey will be the only Razorback running in the 200-meter dash. In the 400-meter dash Dittoe and junior transfer Maurice Bridges will represent Arkansas, while senior Josh Landreth, junior Robbie Stevens and Wittenmyer will run in the 600-yard dash.
A corps of sophomore middle distance runners will see action in the 800-meter run. Phillip Aagaard, Said Ahmed, James Hatch and Michael Taylor will all compete in the event.
In the mile race seniors Chad Grundy, Daniel Lincoln, junior Westley Alkin, and sophomore Jason Sandfort will run in the event. Senior Patrick Thomas and freshman Luis Bordes will lead Arkansas in the 3,000-meter run.
