Razorbacks collect 15 All-America honors

FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas men’s track and field team collected 15 All-America honors Monday with the announcement of the 2011 outdoor accolades by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The Razorbacks finished tied for 10th place with 25 points at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, last weekend.

Arkansas totaled 15 honors spread among 11 student-athletes in seven events. Marek Niit (200m, 4x100m, 4x400m) earned a team-high three All-America accolades. Neil Braddy (4x100m, 4x400m) and LaShawn Butler (200m, 4x100m) were each selected twice, while the remaining honors for the team went to Tarik Batchelor (long jump), Caleb Cross (4x100m), Brede Raa Ellingsen (high jump), Raymond Higgs (long jump), Kevin Lazas (decathlon), Ben Skidmore (4x400m), Travis Southard (4x400m) and Dorian Ulrey (1,500m).

First-team honors went to Batchelor (seventh place, long jump), Butler (seventh place, 200m), Higgs (eighth place, long jump), Niit (second place, 200m), Ulrey (second place, 1,500m) and the fifth-place 4×400 relay team.

This marks the second outdoor honor for Ulrey and he will close out his Razorback career as a seven-time All-American, indoor and outdoor awards combined. For the rest of the Razorbacks’ 2011 honorees, this is the first outdoor selection of their respective careers. Arkansas’ 4×400 relay receives outdoor All-America status for the first time since the 2000 season.

As a conference, the Big 12 racked up 58 First-Team All-America nods, followed by the SEC (51) and Pac-10 (26). The Big 12 also had the biggest carry on the women’s side with 48 first-team honorees, followed by the Pac-10 (39) and SEC (38).

First-team honors were awarded to those who placed in the championships’ top eight or were a member of an eight-person final. Second-team awards were handed out to those who earned final classification between ninth and 16th place.

With the collegiate season in the books, several Razorbacks will turn their attention to national and international competition during the summer months. The USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held June 23-26 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The junior national championships will be held concurrently.
