Razorbacks conclude summer with Team USA

FAYETTEVILLE – The USA Baseball Collegiate National Team recently completed a successful summer schedule and the four members of the Arkansas Razorback baseball team that played for Team USA were an integral part of the team’s success.

Sophomore DJ Baxendale and freshman Dominic Ficociello were with the team for the entire summer schedule. Freshman Ryne Stanek was with the team for the first nine games, while sophomore Matt Reynolds joined the team for the latter part of the summer schedule. In addition to the four Arkansas players on the team, Razorback head coach Dave Van Horn served as an assistant coach for the squad.

The Collegiate National Team finished the summer with an 11-2-1 overall record, including winning a five-game series against Japan to close the summer.

In the series-clinching win in game three against Japan, Ficociello drove in the game-winning run and went 2-for-4. He had a game-tying, two-RBI single in game two of the series and also scored the eventual game-winning run. Defensively, Ficociello committed just one error in 120 chances for a .992 fielding percentage.

Stanek was with the Collegiate National Team for the early part of the team’s schedule. During his time with the team, Stanek appeared in two games, with one start, and posted a 1-0 record with a 1.00 ERA. Stanek allowed just one run and struck out 12 in nine innings of work. He started the first game of the Prospect Classic against the USA 18U National Team and tossed 6.1 shutout innings, striking out six. After finishing with Team USA, Stanek has returned to the Cape Cod League and is pitching with Bourne.

After starting the summer in the Cape Cod League, Reynolds joined Team USA for the final seven games of the team’s schedule. Reynolds played in six games, including five starts, for the Collegiate National Team and had a .227 batting average with two RBI and three stolen bases.
