FAYETTEVILLE – The USA Baseball Collegiate National Team recently completed a successful summer schedule and the four members of the Arkansas Razorback baseball team that played for Team USA were an integral part of the team’s success.
Sophomore DJ Baxendale and freshman Dominic Ficociello were with the team for the entire summer schedule. Freshman Ryne Stanek was with the team for the first nine games, while sophomore Matt Reynolds joined the team for the latter part of the summer schedule. In addition to the four Arkansas players on the team, Razorback head coach Dave Van Horn served as an assistant coach for the squad.
The Collegiate National Team finished the summer with an 11-2-1 overall record, including winning a five-game series against Japan to close the summer.
Baxendale started three games during the summer for Team USA and compiled an 0-1 record with a 3.38 ERA. In 13.1 innings, Baxendale allowed 11 runs, only five of which were earned, on 12 hits and struck out 12 batters. He held opposing hitters to a .245 batting average.
Ficociello finished the summer with a .283 batting average with nine RBI and seven runs scored. He also was a perfect 5-for-5 in stolen base attempts. Ficociello finished the summer on an eight-game hitting streak and had several key hits in Team USA’s series victory against Japan. In the series-clinching win in game three against Japan, Ficociello drove in the game-winning run and went 2-for-4. He had a game-tying, two-RBI single in game two of the series and also scored the eventual game-winning run. Defensively, Ficociello committed just one error in 120 chances for a .992 fielding percentage.
Stanek was with the Collegiate National Team for the early part of the team’s schedule. During his time with the team, Stanek appeared in two games, with one start, and posted a 1-0 record with a 1.00 ERA. Stanek allowed just one run and struck out 12 in nine innings of work. He started the first game of the Prospect Classic against the USA 18U National Team and tossed 6.1 shutout innings, striking out six. After finishing with Team USA, Stanek has returned to the Cape Cod League and is pitching with Bourne.
After starting the summer in the Cape Cod League, Reynolds joined Team USA for the final seven games of the team’s schedule. Reynolds played in six games, including five starts, for the Collegiate National Team and had a .227 batting average with two RBI and three stolen bases. Reynolds had at least one hit in each of the first four games against Japan and had an RBI single in the first game to give Team USA an early lead. Reynolds will spend the rest of the summer in the Cape Cod League, suiting up for Yarmouth-Dennis.
