Razorbacks finish day with five wins

NORMAN, Okla. — After the first round of the main draw of the ITA Regional tournament at Oklahoma University, the Razorbacks collected three singles and two doubles victories. Gregoire Lehmann, Matt Hogan and Chris Nott defeated their opponents to advance to the second round of play in the singles main draw.

“We went 6-5 for the day, and the quality of tennis in this region is as good as any in the country,” head coach Robert Cox said.

Lehmann defeated Bessonov of Oklahoma State University, 7-5. His next opponent will be Marinescu of Wichita State University.

Arkansas Senior Chris Nott was victorious against Southern Illinois opponent, Florez, 6-1, 6-1. He will play against McKie of Drake in his next match.

Matt Hogan defeated Stenger of Nebraska, 4-6, 7-6 (10), 6-4. Saturday he will face Marsland from the University of Tulsa.

In doubles competition, Arkansas was able to pick up two more wins. Lehmann and Zogaj defeated Fabik and Florez from Southern Illinois University, 8-5. The Hogs then fell to Gallego and Arndt of Minnesota, 8-5.

Chris Nott and Matt Hogan were also victorious against Wichita State opponents, Chermaci and Nico, 8-6. They then went on to defeat Boney and Viditech of Nebraska, 8-1.

“Greg beat one of the top seeds from Oklahoma, and Chris and Matt are the No. 2 seed and they won two matches to get to the quarterfinals,” said Cox. “We held our own and now we are looking to improve.”

With weather permitting, the second round of singles will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the third round of singles at Noon and doubles times are not yet determined.

Michael Nott, Matt Ward and Nick Zogaj will all compete in the consolation bracket to be played Saturday as well.
