FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The Arkansas Razorback football team was chosen to finish fourth in the Southeastern Conference’s Western Division by the media in attendance at the 2009 SEC Football Media Days and three Razorbacks, D.J. Williams, Michael Smith and Malcolm Sheppard were selected on the media’s preseason All-SEC squads.
The Razorbacks picked up 245 points in the team race to finish well ahead of Auburn and Mississippi State. Alabama led the Western Division with 33 first-place votes and was followed by LSU (15) and Ole Miss (16).
Individually, both Williams and Smith were selected by the media to the first-team offense as Arkansas was one of four schools to place more than one person on the squad. Williams took tight end honors while Smith was one of two running backs named to the team. Florida (three), LSU (two) and Alabama (two) also had multiple players on the 11-man team.
On defense, Sheppard was named to the second team. The Bainbridge,Ga., native led the Razorbacks in several statistical categories last season and will be expected to be the anchor of Arkansas’ defensive line.
All three Razorbacks were also named to the Birmingham News Preseason All-SEC team.
