AUBURN, Ala. – The University of Arkansas women’s tennis team opens the 2010 season this weekend at the SEC Fall Coaches’ Classic at the Yarborough Tennis Center in Auburn, Ala.
All 12 SEC member institutions are scheduled to take part with matches beginning a 9 a.m. Friday for the three-day event.
"We are extremely excited to open the fall season at the SEC Coaches Classic," head coach Michael Hegarty said. "The team gained a tremendous amount of experience last season and we have set our goals very high this year. I’m anxious to get underway."
The Razorbacks return the services of senior Anouk Tigu who advanced to the second round of the NCAA Individual Tournament last season in Athens, Ga.. The Moordrecht, Holland, native went 24-11 and played to 14 SEC wins including one in the league tournament. Tigu was the Razorbacks’ No. 1 player and finished the season ranked No. 29 in singles.
Tigu was named the ITA Central Region Player to Watch while teammate Kelsey Sundaram earned ITA Rookie Player of the Year honors. Hegarty was the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year.
Hegarty’s squad returns six other players with extensive experience and welcomes the addition of highly-touted freshman Jade Frampton for 2010-11. All eight Razorbacks are expected to see action this weekend.
As a team, Arkansas reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament before elimination. Ranked No. 22 in the country to end the season, Arkansas finished 18-10 overall and 6-5 in the SEC.
