Razorbacks Host South Dakota State in Midweek Doubleheader

The Arkansas baseball team returns home for a five-game home stand that gets started at 1:05 p.m. Wednesday with a doubleheader against South Dakota State at Baum Stadium.

The Razorbacks and Jackrabbits were originally scheduled to play on Tuesday and Wednesday, but freezing temperatures and snow forced the doubleheader. The second game of the twinbill will begin 45 minutes following the conclusion of game one.

Both games can be heard on the Razorback Baseball Radio Network with Chuck Barrett handling the play-by-play duties and Rick Schaeffer as the analyst. The audio can also be heard over the internet inside the RazorZone at Hogwired.com. Live stats are also available on Hogwired.com.

Head coach Dave Van Horn’s club, which is ranked 28th in the latest Collegiate Baseball poll, returns home for a five-game home stand. Arkansas is coming off of a second-place finish at the Domino’s Pizza Aggie Baseball Classic where they went 2-1 with wins over Louisiana Tech and Ohio State.

The Razorbacks will start two right-handed true freshmen in the doubleheader with South Dakota State. Brett Eibner gets the ball in the first game for his first career start. He is 1-0 on the season in two appearances out of the bullpen. Eibner has a 9.00 ERA after running into trouble in his second inning of work against Louisiana Tech.

James Mahler will get his third start of the season in game two. He does not have a decision this season, but is coming off of a strong start last week vs. Kansas. Mahler boasts a 7.71 ERA in 4.2 innings spread over two starts. He did not allow a run and just one hit over 3.1 innings vs. the Jayhawks while fanning six.

South Dakota State will start right-hander Robert Butler in the first game. He worked seven innings and did not allow a run with seven strikeouts in his first start of the season against Central Arkansas. Southpaw Caleb Thielbar gets the nod in game two after allowing two runs over six innings in his first start vs. the Bears.

The doubleheader marks the first meeting between the two schools on the baseball diamond.
