FAYETTEVILLE – The Razorback women’s tennis team will begin its 2011 dual match season this weekend as No. 66 North Texas and No. 36 Texas A&M come to town to face the No. 22 Hogs on Saturday and Sunday at the Billingsley Tennis Center. The Razorbacks, who are coming off a very strong fall season as well a good showing at the Virginia Winter Invite a week ago, are ready to get the dual match season underway.
“We’re very excited to be playing these teams this weekend,” said Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty. “North Texas made the NCAA’s last year and returns the whole team this year, but I think it’s an excellent match for us and we need to be ready. Texas A&M beat us 4-3 last year in College Station and they have almost the same team as last year so this is a great opening weekend for us to test us right off the bat. With these two matches, we are really wanting to get some good results before we head to Notre Dame for the Kick-Off Weekend.”
Arkansas will enter Saturday’s match after compiling 16 total wins in singles and doubles at the Virginia Winter Invite, their final individual tournament of the season before dual-play. Sophomore Claudine Paulson is riding the biggest hot streak on the team as she went undefeated to win three straight singles matches last weekend, defeating players from LSU, Virginia, and Utah. The No. 35 ranked doubles team of sophomore Kelsey Sundaram and junior Kate Lukomskaya also got their first win of the spring on Monday after defeating the No. 49 team of Anastasia Putilina and Paige Miles of Utah, 8-3.
Senior Anouk Tigu will see her first action of the spring this weekend against North Texas, coming in ranked No. 26 in singles by ITA. She will play her first match after having a stellar fall season, going 10-3 in singles and being crowned the USTA/ITA Central Regional singles champion.
Arkansas’ match against North Texas is scheduled to begin at noon on Saturday, Jan. 22 and the match against Texas A&M is set to start at 11 a.m. on Sunday Jan. 23. All matches will be played at the Billingsley Tennis Center on the Dills Indoor Courts. Also, be sure to check out the live blog during both matches as well as live stats that will be available.
