Razorbacks Sweep Oral Roberts

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas opened its home schedule Tuesday with a sweep of Oral Roberts at the Dills Indoor Tennis Center in Fayetteville.

The Razorbacks, coming off last weekend’s ITA Central Region Indoor Playoff Championship, controlled every match against the Golden Eagles. The Hogs won the first match 7-0, and then claimed the nightcap, 6-0.

“We definitely did not have a letdown today,” Razorback Coach Robert Cox said, “We jumped on Oral Roberts early, and this was the best team I’ve seen them have.”

In the early match, the Razorbacks swept ORU, winning every match in both doubles and singles.

In doubles, seniors Rohan Gajjar and Matt Roberts improved to 4-0 this spring and 7-0 overall with their win over Tyrone Hill and Cuan Farquharson at No. 1, 8-1. At No. 2, senior Adrians Zguns and freshman Blake Strode moved to 4-0 by knocking off Alex Dargel and Clemons Geercken, 8-1. Sophomore Colin Mascall and freshman Austin King bettered their season tally to 2-1, defeating Antonio Salopek and Patrick Guilliod, 8-3, on the No. 3 court.

Arkansas registered straight-set wins on every singles court. Gajjar, ranked No. 100, was the first to finish with a 6-1, 6-2, win over Geercken at No. 4. Sophomore Jimmy Khougassian defeated Guilliod at No. 6, 6-2, 6-0. Zguns was in the No. 2 slot, and took down Farquharson, 6-2, 6-1. 24th-ranked Roberts bested Hill at No. 1, 6-1, 6-3. Strode, ranked 19th, defeated Dargel on court 3, 6-3, 6-4, while Mascall outlasted Salopek, 7-5, 6-3, in the No. 5 position.

The ladder match consisted of only singles. The Hogs again swept the Golden Eagles, winning every match in straight sets.

Zguns knocked off Hill at No. 1, 6-1, 6-4. Strode moved up to No. 2 and bettered Farquharson, 6-1, 6-3. Gajjar took down Dargel at No. 3, 6-2, 6-1. Jung bested Geercken on the No. 4 court, 6-4, 6-2. Khougassian defeated Salopek at No. 5, 6-1, 6-3, while King notched a win over Guilliod at No. 6, 6-2, 6-1.

“We got a lot of guys some good action today,” Cox said, “It was good to see everybody from the seniors all the way to the freshman play well.”

Arkansas returns to action February 3, when the Hogs play host to Missouri St. The match will be held at the Dills Indoor Tennis Center in Fayetteville, and is set for 6 p.m.
