Razorbacks tie in double OT

FAYETTEVILLE – Arkansas put the pressure on Saint Mary’s in the second half and in overtime, but couldn’t get a goal as the two teams battled to a 0-0, double-overtime soccer tie at Razorback Field on Friday.

Saint Mary’s had a 7-5 shot advantage after the first half, but Arkansas out-shot the Gaels 6-5 in the second half, 5-0 in the first 10-minute overtime and 2-0 in the second extra period for an 18-12 overall advantage.

Eight of Arkansas’ shots were on goal while four were on goal for Saint Mary’s. Arkansas had an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. Five fouls were called on the Razorbacks to four on the Gaels.

"I’m proud of the effort," head coach Erin Aubry said. "Our team is doing great at continuing to fight through a lot of adversity, which is being thrown at us. This is good. It’s getting us prepared for the Southeastern Conference."

With the tie, Arkansas is now 3-3-1 for the season while Saint Mary’s is 6-1-1.

The Razorbacks had an advantage from the 78th minute through the end of the game when SMC’s Jordan Marada was red-carded and ejected. The Gaels were not allowed to substitute for her, meaning they had the play the remaining 32 minutes with just 10 players.

Laurel Pastor, who made her first start of the season at forward after playing most of the season at defender, had game highs of six shots with three shots on goal. Jessie Givens had two shots, both on goal. Rachel Carlson, Erin Moskos and Allie Chandler all had one shot on goal.

Britni Williams was in goal and had four saves, and extended her school record for shutouts to 24. She now has 292 saves.

The game was even in the first half with Saint Mary’s having a slight advantage in shots at 7-5. Each team had just one shot on goal. Each team had three corner kicks and one save. There were two fouls on the Gaels and one on Arkansas.

Arkansas was playing at home for the first time since the season-opener on Aug. 22, a 1-0 victory over Florida International.

After the first home game in almost a month, the Razorbacks are immediately back on the road. Arkansas plays Sunday at No. 11 Florida State at noon.
