FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The University of Arkansas men’s basketball team will participate in the 2013 EA Sports Maui Invitational it was announced by tournament organizers on Tuesday morning. The Razorbacks are one of eight teams that have been invited to play at Maui’s famed Lahaina Civic Center in the championship round. Joining Arkansas is Baylor, California, Dayton, Gonzaga, Minnesota, Syracuse and the host Chaminade. The 2013 event, which is a part of the 2013-14 basketball season, is the 30th in what has become one of the nation’s premier early-season college basketball tournaments. “We are looking forward to our participation in the 2013 EA Sports Maui Invitational,” Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Jeff Long said. “Being selected to play in one of the most prestigious tournaments in college basketball is a credit to the strength of the Razorback basketball program under the leadership of Coach Mike Anderson. I know our fans and college basketball fans around the country will enjoy watching the Razorbacks bring an exciting brand of basketball to Maui to take on some of the nation’s best teams in this great college basketball tradition.” The 2013 Maui Invitational will be Arkansas’ third time participating in the event. In 2005 the Razorbacks finished sixth with a 1-2 record which included a victory over Kansas, 65-64, and losses to No. 3 Connecticut, 77-68, and No. 23 Maryland, 75-62. Arkansas first participated in the event in 1991 and placed second with a 2-1 record. That team defeated Minnesota, a 2013 participant, 92-83, and Chaminade, 99-84, before losing to Michigan State, 86-71. “The Maui Invitational is a wonderful event and brings some of the best basketball teams in the country to one location,” Arkansas Head Coach Mike Anderson said. “Being considered for this tournament is an honor for our program and I look forward to the challenge that comes with playing the elite teams that have been assembled for the 2013 event.”
