Razorbacks top Miami

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Playing against Miami from the powerful Atlantic Coast Conference, Arkansas’s soccer team got the first goal of Erin Moskos’ career and goalkeeper Britni Williams tied a school record as the Razorbacks posted a 1-0 victory Friday afternoon.

The win is the 28th for Williams, which ties the school record shared with Carrie Dillsaver (2003-06).

The game was the first contest of the Embassy Suites Kick-Off Classic hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University at the FGCU Soccer Complex. FGCU and the Razorbacks meet on Sunday at noon.

"It’s a great win for us," head coach Erin Aubry said. "Miami is an explosive team and physical. This was a wonderful result for us. More importantly, we talked about our mentality and being resilient, and taking care of details. Every player on our team did that from the start. That was the difference in a team being prepared to play and not being prepared to play, which is what happened last week."

Arkansas lost a 2-1 decision at Stephen F. Austin last week.

Moskos, a junior forward, scored for the Razorbacks on a breakaway at the 56:02 mark. Her goal came after freshman Jessie Givens broke up two potential scoring opportunities for Miami on the defensive end.

"Erin has spent eight months working on finishing, since the team finished the season last year," Aubry said. "This is what you get when you put in hard work. She shot to goal with confidence because she’s been working so hard."

Arkansas, which is now 2-1, missed another scoring opportunity with 18:57 left when Allie Chandler’s penalty kick was tipped out left by Miami goalkeeper Vikki Alonzo.

Both teams played hard and aggressive, and had several attacking opportunities.

For the game, Arkansas had 11 shots with six on goal while Miami had 10 with five on goal. Arkansas outshot Miami in the second half, 7-3, after getting outshot in the first half, 7-4. Arkansas had five corner kicks for the game while Miami had three.

Moskos and Allie Chandler each had two shots in the game. Both for Moskos were on goal while one for Chandler was on goal. Yvonne Desjarlais, Andrea Carlson and Taylor Green also had shots on goal.

In the first half, Miami, which is 2-2-1, had seven shots with four on goal. Arkansas had four shots with one on goal, plus one goal nullified by an offsides call. Kelsey Allison had the shot and goal that was not allowed.Arkansas had four saves and the Hurricanes one. Miami had the only corner kick of the first period.

Williams had five saves for the game. Williams also extended her school record of shutouts to 24. She is also fifth on the saves list with 271.

Friday’s game was the first meeting between Arkansas and Miami. Sunday marks the first matchup between the Razorbacks and FGCU.
