Razorbacks up to No. 2 in USTFCCCA Top 25
FAYETTEVILLE — After a strong showing at the NCAA West Preliminary in Austin, the University of Arkansas men’s track and field team is up to No. 2 in this week’s release of the USTFCCCA national poll. The Razorbacks racked up 18 national qualifiers during the preliminary weekend, and coupled with its two entries in the decathlon, Arkansas will have 20 scoring opportunities at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Razorbacks entered the outdoor championship season ranked fifth but moved up to fourth place in the national poll after winning the program’s 18th SEC team title at the conference meet in Columbia, Mo. The win also completed Arkansas’ second consecutive SEC Triple Crown. Tied for the national lead with 20 qualifiers for the NCAA final site, the Razorbacks moved up two spots to its current position. Arkansas’ entries will be spread among 17 athletes and two relays. The team’s four entries at 800 meters represent the largest number of qualifiers by a team in one event. Tarik Batchelor will pull double duty with competition in the long jump and triple jump. Arkansas will be represented by in running events by Kemoy Campbell at 5,000 meters, Caleb Cross in the 400-meter hurdles, Akheem Gauntlett at 400 meters, Solomon Haile at 10,000 meters, Stanley Kebenei in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Anthony Lieghio at 800 meters, Leoman Momoh at 800 meters, Patrick Rono at 800 meters, Tomas Squella at 800 meters and the team’s 4×100- and 4×400-meter relays. In the field events, the Razorbacks will have Batchelor, Nathanael Franks in the decathlon, Dwayne Golbek in the high jump, Raymond Higgs in the long jump, Andrew Irwin in the pole vault, Jarrion Lawson in the long jump, Kevin Lazas in the decathlon and Anthony May II in the high jump. Arkansas is one of eight teams from the SEC ranked this week, and one of four inside the national top six. In addition to the Razorbacks, the SEC is represented by top-ranked Texas A&M, No. 4 Florida, No. 6 LSU, No. 11 Georgia, No. 14 Ole Miss, No. 16 Alabama and No. 23 Mississippi State. Among the nation’s conferences, the SEC is atop the list with 109 national qualifiers. With national qualifiers decided, the collegiate season will come to a conclusion June 5-8 with the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore.
