Waco, Texas- The University of Arkansas softball team concluded its opening tournament with an 8-0 victory over Wichita State at the Getterman Classic. With a weekend record of 4-1 the Razorbacks were named the Champions of the 2012 Getterman Classic. The Razorbacks finished the tournament the way they began, with their bats swinging. Sophomore Amanda Geile began Arkansas’s string of runs in the bottom of the second when she blasted a homerun over the left-center field wall. Following Geile’s homerun, sophomore Jennifer Rambo stepped up and added another homerun for the Razorbacks. After a bunt to get on first by sophomore Ashley Martindale and two walks, freshman Devon Wallace singled to left field bringing in Martindale and third baseman, Chloe Oprzedek. Geile came back to the plate in the same inning and grabbed a triple bringing in two more runs and giving the Razorbacks a 7-0 lead."It is awesome how we are coming out swinging at the beginning of the games," said Head Coach Mike Larabee. In the circle for the Razorbacks, junior Chelsea Cohen recorded her first win of the season. In five innings she threw 64 pitches, had six strikeouts, zero walks and only allowed five hits. "Chelsea had a great performance," said Larabee. "She was in command for the whole game and changed speeds well."In the bottom of the third, senior Tori Mort was brought in off a double from Wallace to give the Razorbacks an 8-0 lead and eventually forcing a run rule and five inning game.The Razorbacks leave Waco with an outstanding performance for the weekend with a record of 4-1 while also knocking off number seven Baylor. In the five games, as a team, the Razorbacks recorded 40 hits while batting a .333. They held their opponents to 23 hits and .221 batting average. Arkansas blasted out seven homeruns hit by seven different players, (Mort, Harrison, Wallace, Navarro, Geile, Bronkey and Rambo)."We had a really good weekend on offense," said Larabee. "The seven homeruns by the seven different players just shows the versatility that we have as a team."
In the circle, Cohen, and freshmen Ciara Clampitt and Kimmy Beasley all grabbed their first win of the season with Beasley going 2-0 on the weekend. As a group they struck out 18 batters and only allowed ten walks.Five Razorbacks were named to the Getterman Classic Tournament team; Beasley, Mort, Harrison, Wallace and Geile.Arkansas will travel to Tampa, Fla. next weekend to play in the University of South Florida Tournament. There they will take on Georgia Southern, Drake, Wisconsin and USF."Right now the most important game of the year is our next game, which will be Georgia Southern," said Larabee. "That is who we are focused on and that is what are mentality has been thus far, taking one game at a time."
