Razorbacks wrap up at Baylor

Waco, Texas — The University of Arkansas men’s tennis team has concluded their trip to the HEB Baylor Invitational at the Baylor Tennis Center in Waco, Texas. The Razorbacks exhibited a solid performance going 7-4 in both singles and doubles at the three-day event.

“This tournament was a great experience and many good things will come from this weekends matches, “ Assistant coach Eduardo Rincon said. “We know what we need to focus on and keep moving forward.”

No. 94 Christopher Nott cruised past his opponents on Friday, with wins over Rafael Garcia of Texas Tech, 6,3 6-1, and Texas A&M’s Jeff Dadamo, 7-6(6), 6-3. Nott bid adieu in the round of 16 when he fell to Tulsa’s No. 64 Phillip Stephens, the tournaments No. 2 seed in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-1. Nott ended the tournament 2-1 in singles play.

Junior Matt Hogan fell early Friday in a tough match against the No. 22 Bruno Rosa, the tournaments No. 3 seed of Rice, 7-5, 6-3. He quickly rebounded with three consecutive wins in consolation draw, including victory over UTA’s Mindavgas Celedinas, 6-2, 4-0.

Saturday was action packed as Hogan steamrolled the competition with victory over TCU’s Zach Nichols, 6-1, 6-4, and Max Steven of Tennesse, 6-4, 6-3. On Sunday, Hogan fell to Ionut Beleteu of Oklahoma, 6-4, 6-3, in the semi-finals of the consolation draw.

“Matt did a great job and came out with solid wins over two really good players.” Rincon said.

In doubles action, Hogan and Nott paired up to take an 8-3 win over Piotr Olechowski and Javier Pulgar-Garcia of ULL. The duo’s winning streak continued in a nightcap match against TCU’s Slah Mbarek and Chris Price, taking the match, 8-6. In the quarterfinals, Texas Tech’s Gonzalo Escobar and Andre Stabile eliminated the Razorbacks from the tournament with an 8-3 victory over Nott and Hogan.
