FAYETTEVILLE — Following a break in scheduling for the holidays, the University of Arkansas women’s basketball team (12-0) returns to the hardwood and hosts Mississippi Valley State (1-8) inside Bud Walton Arena on Saturday.
The Razorbacks look to close out their non-conference schedule with a win over MVSU and remain unbeaten heading into SEC play, while the Devilettes look to steal their second win this season on the road in Fayetteville. MVSU’s lone win came over Eastern Kentucky.
This marks the eighth all-time meeting between the two programs, as UA has never lost to MVSU and holds an 8-0 all-time record. The most recent meeting between the two came during the 2011-12 season when the Razorbacks earned a 59-40 victory.
MVSU finished 17-15 overall last season, including a 6-8 record in road games. The Deviletes finished 12-6 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, placing second in league standings behind Texas Southern (16-2).
Three players are averaging double figures for MVSU, led by Ashley Beals’ 12.4 points per game. Beals also leads the team in rebounding with 6.6 boards per game. Jasmyne Sanders and Olivia Kennedy average 10.1 points per contest each.
Sanders was named to the Preseason All-SWAC Second Team after averaging 6.9 points and 3.7 rebounds per game last season.
Despite the scoring effort of Beals, Kennedy and Sanders, MVSU has been outscored by opponents by an average of 21.1 points per game this season. Arkansas ranks third in the NCAA in scoring margin and has outscored opponents by an average of 31.9 points per game.
The Razorbacks also continue to hold the best scoring defense in the NCAA, allowing just 43.8 points per game.
Arkansas and Mississippi Valley State are scheduled to tip off at 2 p.m. inside Bud Walton Arena on Saturday.
