FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas women’s basketball team concludes its series of opponent previews as it counts down to tipoff of the 2013-14 season. Last up on the nonconference schedule for the Razorbacks is the Mississippi Valley State Devilettes.
Opponent: Mississippi Valley State Devilettes
Date: Dec. 28, 2013 -2 p.m.
Location: Bud Walton Arena – Fayetteville, Ark.
Series Results: This marks the eighth all-time meeting between the Devilettes and Razorbacks. Arkansas has never lost to Mississippi Valley State, as the Devilettes are 0-8 all-time against the Razorbacks. The programs last faced during the 2011-12 season, as Arkansas earned a 59-40 victory.
Last Season: Mississippi Valley State finished 17-15 overall and was 6-8 in road games. The Devilettes went 12-6 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, finishing second in conference standings behind Texas Southern (16-2).
Foe to Know: Joncyee Sanders, 5-8, Guard, Senior. Sanders returns as the leading scorer for the Devilettes after posting 8.8 points per game last season. Mississippi Valley State does not return a double-digit scorer from last season, so Sanders looks to fill the void and improve. The senior also added 186 assists, which led the team, and averaged 5.4 rebounds per contest.
Sister, Sister: Twin sisters Joncyee and Jasmyne Sanders of Mississippi Valley State women’s basketball form a dynamic duo for the Devilettes. The two were named to the Preseason All-SWAC Team, as point guard Joncyee was tabbed First Team and Jasmyne was named to the Second Team. Joncyee led MVSU to the SWAC Tournament championship game last season, before the team fell to Prarie View A&M in four overtimes. Meanwhile, Jasmyne averaged 6.9 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.
