FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The University of Arkansas women’s basketball (1-0) prepares to host Oral Roberts (1-1) at Bud Walton Arena on Wednesday nightinits second game ofthe young season.
Tipping off their 2013-14 season last Friday, the Razorbacksshot 50 percent from the floor and rolled to an impressive 81-45 win over Sam Houston State. The freshman trio of Jessica Jackson, Kelsey Brooks and McKenzie Adams led the way offensively, combining to score 50 points.
"They stepped up, especially those freshmen who stepped up and shot the ball really well,"head coach Tom Collen said of his team. "It was a nice surprise for us. You get a big lead and you’re shooting the ball well, then things just seem to flow a little bit easier as the game goes on."
Combined, the Razorback freshmen alone shot 44.8 percent from the floor and were an impressive 10-for-19 from three-point range. Jackson and Brooks each scored17 points, while Adams added 16 points on 4-of-6three-point shooting.
"They got off to a real good start, so they just kept firing," Collen said. "They played relaxed. We are going to depend on those freshmen. All three of them don’t have to score 17 points a game. I think our veterans will probably step up and do some scoring for us as well. But, it will be nice to know that one or two of them will step up and have a big game for us."
Hosting a pair of home games at Bud Walton Arena this week, the Razorbacks first shift their focus toward Oral Roberts. Wednesday’s matchup marks the 24th meeting between the twoprograms, as Arkansas earned a 65-37 in the most recent meetingduring the 2011-12 season.
